The Lift Boy is a beautiful picture with a story loaded with hope. My heart rate increased as he inched towards the painting. I knew it was surely going to be a masterpiece that would move me to tears. I mentally prepared myself for the big reveal with the slow and apprehensive background music. I certainly didn’t expect a change of scene at that moment to show how life had changed for the family and friends of The Lift Boy. When I finally got a glimpse of the painting, tears rolled down my cheek. I realized that it was not the painting alone that moved me but the story behind it as well.
Here are a few certain things that I’m sure everyone who watched it would take away. Our parents do as much as they can to make our lives as comfortable as possible, and we should give back to them as a token of love and respect. They don’t want us to go through the trouble they went through. Sometimes, we might think we are in the worst possible situation, but others have it worse. We should be happy with what we have and try to make the best out of the situation. A lift is a confined space, but you can make friends, study, read a book, play games, contemplate on all your life decisions and find happiness.
The main take away for me is that art is nothing when it doesn’t have a story behind it. Many paintings may come and go. However, the one that is recognized and appreciated is when you know the story behind it. The same happens in Taare Zameen Par. The big drawing revelation of Aamir Khan along with the build-up with the beats of Kholo Kholo brought tears to the eyes of many. It wasn’t just because of the stunning painting but because of the story it conveyed.
One example from my own experience would be when I sat for an interview with a company. While introducing myself, I mentioned drawing as my hobby. Then, they asked me to draw something. If I drew something captivating with no story, I don’t think it would have made a difference. I narrated the story of ‘The Happiness Series’ posted every Wednesday on the Instagram handle of The Guindy Times, whilst drawing myself as a stick figure. That tiny version of me suddenly became a work of art. It didn’t matter if I got selected or not. I was thrilled when I made them smile.
Give meaning to your artwork with a story to bring it to life.
